Audi’s 6 Series sedans are aimed squarely at that Goldilocks sweet spot. Neither too big, nor too small, the 6 Series seems to be the right choice for a certain kind of sedan buyer. The latest 6 Series offers a brand new 3.2 FSI V6 engine upgraded with the Audi Valvelift System (AVS) that puts out a healthy 265 horsepower. Other available plants include a supercharged 3.0 TFSI and 4.2 FSI V8 engines to offer buyers a versatile array of powertrain choices. There is also a new Sport Package with lowered sport suspension, sport steering wheel and either all-season 18” or performance 19” tires.

Daytime running lights are standard on halogen-equipped cars and inside, buyers are treated to a new level of functionality and comfort with an optional cold weather package that comes with a heated steering wheel with shift paddles. The Premium Plus models enjoy the luxury of standard cutting-edge third-generation navigation system that includes SIRIUS traffic logic. The Audi A6 & S6 is also is listed as a “Top Safety Pick” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Other quality items consist daytime running lights standard on halogen-equipped vehicles, navigation upgraded to 3G MMI and navigation and SIRIUS traffic logic, reduced brake dust pads, new 19” Sport Package with performance tires and new 18” Sport Package with all-season tires and the aforementioned heated steering wheel with Cold Weather package.

With those sorts of features and accouterments, it’s easy to see why the 6 Series is so popular. If you find the 4 Series to be too small, and the 8 Series to be too big, the choices within the 6 range of cars give you enough spottiness, but also enough room and luxury options to make the Audi 6 Series a good choice all around.

2011 Update

For 2011, Audi has done a major revision of the A6 sedan, even though it was just updated a couple years ago. They make it slightly bigger – 3 more inches of wheelbase and 0.7 inches wider – and gave it a better drag coefficient of 0.26 so it slides through the air better to increase fuel economy and performance. The redesign is reminiscent of the recent A7 Sportback in many ways, especially the interior.

Audi has also downsized the engines this year, offering a new range of powerplants. The two gasoline-powered versions include a 2.8 liter FSI V-6 with 204 horsepower and a 300 horsepower 3-liter turbocharged FSI engine. Three diesel-powered TDI variants include a 2-liter inline-4 , or one of two 3-liter turbocharged diesel engines. No doubt we won’t be seeing two of those three TDI options here in the States. Interestingly, the new 2011 A6 will be receiving a hybrid variant as well, mating the 2-liter TSFI 211 hp engine with an electric motor producing another 45 horsepower. Although Audi has traditionally shyed away from hybrids, they’re likely feeling the pressure from competitors in that segment.

2012 Update

For 2012, Audi has enlarged the A6 but managed to make it lighter – anywhere between 78 and 165 lbs lighter, to be exact, depending on the model. As with last year, the 2012 A6 comes in either FWD or AWD quattro, and Premium to Prestige trim levels. The new A6 will be powered by either of two gasoline engines, both of which use Audi’s TSFI technology. The first choice is for the FWD models – a new-for-2012 2.0-liter inline-4 producing 211 hp, and will be controlling the front wheels through the use of Audi’s Fronttrak CVT transmission. This engine is less powerful than last year but gets 28 mpg. The second choice powers the A6 AWD quattro, and sports 10 more horsepower than last year’s. It’s the 3.0-liter TFSI V6, producing 310 hp this year.

Prices go up just a bit this year, with the front-wheel drive 2012 Audi A6 in Premium trim priced at $41,700. The 2012 A6 quattro will retail for $49,900 in Premium level but can top-out at $56,700 for the Prestige model.
